During Prohibition, the New York Mafia established itself as the supplier and controller of alcohol in the city. After Prohibition was repealed, openly Gay bars remained illegal in New York City, and the Mafia maintained control over every facet of the Gay bar scene for decades. The West Village was originally encompassed by Little Italy, and many of the Gay bar owners and operators were part of that West Village underworld of vice. The relationship between the Mafia and the Gay community was complex - simultaneously exploitative and mutually beneficial. This film sheds new light on that complex relationship and even reveals new insights into the Mafia involvement in the events of the Stonewall uprising, a sea change moment in Gay history.
